A Fantastic Day at Butser Ancient Farm

History is alive and growing at Butser Farm — catch up on the latest!

Both Kingfisher and Swan class enjoyed an unforgettable adventure at Butser Ancient Farm last week, taking a step back in time to experience life in the ancient world. From the moment they arrived, the children were buzzing with excitement—and the day certainly didn’t disappoint.

Hands‑On History in Action

Throughout the day, the children took part in a range of immersive activities:

  • Jewellery‑making: Using copper wire, the children crafted their own rings, learning traditional techniques and discovering how ancient people created personal adornments.
  • Pottery: With lumps of clay and the tip of a feather, they shaped and decorated their own pots—each one unique and full of character.
  • Wattle Fence Building: Working together, the children wove hazel branches to build sections of a wattle fence, gaining a real appreciation for the skill and teamwork needed in ancient construction.
  • Archaeological Dig: Perhaps one of the most exciting activities, the children became archaeologists for the day, carefully brushing away soil to uncover hidden artefacts and ancient treasures.

Exploring the Farm

Between activities, they had the chance to meet some of the farm’s friendly sheep and goats, which was a highlight for many. After a busy morning, everyone enjoyed a well‑earned lunch together in the sunshine.

A Day to Remember

The children were fantastic throughout—curious, engaged, and brilliantly behaved. It was a joy to see them learning through doing, asking thoughtful questions, and supporting one another.

The trip to Butser Ancient Farm was not only educational but truly memorable. They returned to school tired but happy, with clay‑covered hands, handmade treasures, and plenty of stories to share.
